How much does a motorcycle license cost? How many driving lessons should you take on average?

motorcycle license costs

In order to determine how much a motorcycle license costs, you must first know what categories there are. Getting the A license or the motorcycle license, how does it work, and what is required for it? Getting a motorcycle license is different from getting your car license and therefore has its own rules. Therefore, the cost of a car license is different from or more than a motorcycle license. Getting your motorcycle license is not done with 1 exam, it is split into several exams.

First, you need to determine what kind of motorcycle license you want to get. Here are the differences between driving license A1, A2 and A driving licenses:

Driving license A1 ( Light motorcycle ): For this license you can start driving lessons from the age of 17. And from the age of 18, you may take a practical test for driving license A1. To be able to start driving lessons, you must have passed the theory exam for the motorcycle or be in possession of a valid car license (driving license B). With this driving license, you may drive a motorcycle with max. 125cc engine capacity and max. 11 kW of power.

Driving license A2 (Medium Weight Motorcycle): From the age of 20, you may get a driving license for A2. For the driving lessons, the same applies as for A1: To be able to start driving lessons, you must have passed the theory exam for the motorcycle or be in possession of a valid car driving license (driving license B) or valid motorcycle driving license A1. If you have had your A1 license for two years, you only need to take the traffic participation exam (AVD we’ll explain what that is below). If you don’t have one, you still have to take both exams (AVB and AVD). With this license, you may drive a motorcycle with max 35 kW of power.

Driving license A (heavy motorcycle): From the age of 21, you may obtain a driving license for driving license A. To be able to start driving lessons, you must have passed the theory exam for the motorcycle or be in possession of a valid car driving license (driving license B) or valid motorcycle driving license A1 or A2. If you have had your A2 driver’s license for two years, you only need to take the AVD driving test. Do you have an A2 license but have not had it for 2 years and do you get your motorcycle license before your 24th birthday? Then you get Code 80 on your license. With this license you may drive on:
– A motorcycle or three-wheeled motor vehicle of category A1.
– A motorcycle of category A2
– A three-wheeled motor vehicle of category A.
Code 80 expires two years after obtaining your A or A2 motorcycle license or if you turn 24 before that time. Only then may you drive a two-wheeled motor vehicle of category A.
With category A you may drive a motorcycle with unlimited power.

Getting an A driving license (motorcycle license), what to do?

When starting your A license (motorcycle license), you must first pass your theory test before you can apply for a practical exam, therefore it is recommended that you first apply for the theory exam at the CBR.

Lessons part 1 AVB (General Vehicle Control), costs
The lessons for part 1 can begin. During these lessons, you learn the special operations for vehicle control (AVB). This is done on a parking lot or something like that. On this terrain you will then learn the following skills:
● Braking.
● Turning.
● Walking with your motorcycle.
● Turning and slalom.

The AVB exam consists of 12 exercises of which 7 will be tested during the exam, of the 7 selected exercises, you need to perform 5 correctly to pass the AVB exam. For this exam you do not need to have your theory exam, this only applies when you are on the road.

How many lessons do you need for Part 1 (AVB) operations for vehicle control:

The average number of lesson hours are: 10 lesson hours
Estimated cost: € 700

Lessons part 2 AVD (General Traffic Participation), Costs

Before you can start with the AVD lessons, you must be in possession of the theory exam. Otherwise, you are not allowed on public roads with a motorcycle. These lessons are therefore held in public transport, where often the instructor is in a car behind it to keep an eye on everything.
Before you may do an exam, you must be able to show that you have the engine well under control and clearly demonstrate that you have insight into traffic.

How many lessons do you need for part 2 (AVD) General Traffic Participation:

The average number of hours are: 12 lesson hours
Estimated cost: € 800,-

The expectation is that with a total of 20-22 lessons you should be able to pass your motorcycle test (however, this varies from person to person).
Regarding the total costs, many driving schools offer packages that include the exams 1x or 2x. Of course, you can buy exams separately, but keep in mind that these costs are added. The packages are usually cheaper so you can come out (for the complete driving license) at about 1400-1600 euros total. So for 1500 euros you should theoretically be able to get your driving license A If you have already previous car driving experience.
